Gandhi is assassinated in New Delhi, India by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist who shot him three times at point blank range as he was on his way to attend a prayer meeting.

The day of his death is now recognized within India as “Martyrs’ Day.”

January 30, 1948 - 64 years ago today.
